Café Scooters
Drachten, The Netherlands
Sunday, October 27, 2002

Another return visit for Acoustic Beans. Café Scooters was the first stop on my Spring 2002 tour with Jared Gallardo. As has always been my experience in Fryslan, coming back is wonderful. This north central section of Nederland has its own language and culture, distinct from that of the rest of the country. Universal Dutch hospitality and gezellig is refined to an art form in Drachten.

Café Scooters proprietors Ton and Ali are also accomplished performers. Tonight, Ton sang with Frank Curtis and me on the Stones' Honky Tonk Women. A fabulous singer named Wieke Van Der Veen also sang a few songs with us. She performs with the popular Dutch band Flightcase, and just happened to be hanging out at Scooters on a night off.

She sings with power and grace, and is also a fantastic harmony singer. I invited her to join us onstage for our Showcase in Nieuwegein on November 21 and my CD Presentatie in Hardenberg on November 22. A week later, she joined us in Ravenswaaij for a rehearsal and it sounded wonderful. Her voice blended beautifully with Frank's harmony vocals.
